A small group of global health academic leaders has been meeting since September 2007 to explore ways to frame an organization and process by which academic global health center representatives can meet and support each other. In September 2008 an Inaugural Meeting of University Consortium for Global Health took place in San Francisco. The meeting participants looked at development of global health as an academic endeavor; and started to define the role, function and membership of an organization that advocates, promotes, communicates and facilitates the growth of global health as an academic discipline.
Expanding to a 10-member Board of Directors and under a new name of Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), this group of global health leaders has continued to define and build this new Consortium. The CUGH First Annual Meeting this September will be pivotal in defining and articulating the important role that universities play in global health initiatives worldwide.
